A new report put out by animal rights organization Viva! is warning that a mutated bird flu 90 times deadlier than the current pandemic is coming because of our use of animals, specifically chickens.

Titled Zoonoses: a ticking time bomb the report was lead by senior health researcher Dr. Justine Butler.

The paper focuses on the new mutated strain of H5N1 bird flu that has emerged and begun to spread around the world. Scientists believe this new strain to be 90 times or more deadlier than COVID-19.

This new strain of bird flu is capable of killing six out of ten of those infected from what has been witnessed so far in its spread.

Zoonotic diseases are increasing their spread from non-humans to humans according to the report and “developing with increasing frequency” with three out of four most new diseases in humans coming from infectious diseases spread from animals.

In a press statement from Viva! they said:

”Scientists are concerned that the global explosion in factory farming and wildlife markets could make the transmission of mutated strains of the H5N1 bird flu virus to humans much easier. They include familiar illnesses and diseases such as the common cold, influenza (flu), polio, AIDS, and measles alongside other lesser-known ones such as SARS, MERS, Nipah virus, and Ebola. Most recently, Covid-19 has joined this growing list, having jumped from bats or other wild animals to humans, leading to the current pandemic. There are over 200 zoonotic diseases and 56 of them affect some two-and-a-half billion people and cause nearly three million deaths every year.”

In the report Zoonoses: a ticking time bomb lead researcher Dr. Butler wrote:

“The majority of both zoonoses and antibiotic-resistant diseases are the result of human activity, with factory farming and wild animal markets lying at the heart of the problem. The solution could not be easier go vegan now!”

Viva! director Juliet Gellatley and Zoologist added to Dr. Butlers statement saying:

“The writing is on the wall. The global explosion in factory farming and wildlife markets has left humankind exposed to catastrophic pandemics that could kill millions of people. For the sake of generations to come we must heed the science and end our collective dependency on the horrific abuse of animals.”

The report also confronts the leading cause of these mutations and the breeding grounds for them being so fertile because of antibiotic use in factory-farmed animals.

“Viruses are not the only threat. Around three-quarters (73 percent) of the world’s antibiotics are used in animal agriculture, not for treating diseases in humans (Van Boeckel et al., 2019).

So as well as new emerging viruses coming from wild animals taken to markets, we have the serious global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Neither viruses nor bacteria respect international borders so going vegan is the clear solution.

Antibiotics have been helping us fight infection since the 1940s. Before they were developed, even a small scratch could be fatal.

Giving birth and having surgery was a lot riskier and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as syphilis and gonorrhea, caused untold misery and could be a death sentence.

We now rely heavily on antibiotics to treat and prevent infection but they are also widely used in agriculture.

The UK government says:

“As in humans, the suboptimal use of antimicrobials in agriculture and veterinary practice contributes to the rise and spread of AMR all over the world” (Global & Public Health Group, 2019).

The use of antibiotics in animals as growth promoters was banned in the EU in 2006 but huge quantities continue to be used globally. Antibiotic use in livestock outweighs human consumption in many countries, in the US, for example, 80 percent of all antibiotics are used in animals (Martin et al., 2015).

In the UK, in 2017, 36 percent of antibiotics were sold for use in animals (Veterinary Medicines Directorate, 2019), a lower proportion than in some other countries, but still a considerable amount at 226 tonnes in 2018 (UKVARSS, 2019).”

The report also goes into further details about China wet markets, multiple different animal species and diseases, and much more. We highly recommend reading the full report here it’s a very necessary read.
