In slaughterhouses, workers stand shoulder to shoulder as they slit animals’ throats. The fast line speeds and close-quartered working conditions make it easy for diseases, including COVID-19, to pass quickly from person to person.

The number of slaughterhouse workers who are known to have tested positive for COVID-19 has already climbed above 35,000. Nearly 90% of them are Black, Latinx, or Asian, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

The CDC has recorded that slaughterhouse workers face an infection rate that’s nine times higher than the overall U.S. infection rate. As COVID-19 continues to infect these workers and their families, PETA, Choice Bison, and other compassionate activists are spreading the message that it’s time to go vegan, for everyone’s sake.

Confining and killing animals for food has been linked to SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19. A recently discovered strain of swine flu with “pandemic potential” is now spreading from pigs to humans in China. That’s why everyone must remember: It’s not only animals who suffer in the meat industry. Every bite of meat supports an industry that also breeds diseases fatal to humans.

What You Can Do

Filthy “wet markets,” in which live animals are slaughtered on site for customers, are a hotspot for diseases. These live-animal markets don’t only exist overseas—there are more than 80 such businesses operating in New York City alone. Join PETA’s call and help get them shut down. It takes less than a minute to take action. What are you waiting for?
