Just ahead of National Ice Cream Day (July 19), PETA has placed a billboard near Bruster’s Real Ice Cream encouraging people to go vegan and opt for Bruster’s new delicious dairy-free flavors, which the compassionate company added after talking with PETA and receiving an initial “D” grade on the group’s ranking of vegan-friendly ice cream chains.

“Mother cows are left crying in distress after their babies are stolen from them on dairy farms, all for a fleeting taste,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging people to scoop up delectable dairy-free treats from Bruster’s—and beyond—and leave cow’s milk for the calves.”

Cows used for dairy are artificially inseminated (that is, raped by inserting an arm into the rectum and a metal rod into the vagina), and their calves are stolen from them shortly after birth so that their milk can be sold and consumed by humans instead. Male calves, who are considered a byproduct by the dairy industry, may be shot in the head shortly after birth or sentenced to a short, miserable life before being killed and carved up as veal. Most female calves are destined for the same fate as their mothers: used as milk machines until their bodies give out and they’re slaughtered for cheap meat.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—is also posting the ad next to Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Store in Oklahoma City.

The billboard is located at 6855 Vaughn Rd.
