Cases of COVID-19 continue to spike around the country, and scientists recently found a new version of the swine flu with pandemic potential. It’s no mystery that eating animals got us into this mess—and vegan eating will prevent new pandemics.

That’s why PETA placed a billboard overlooking a McDonald’s restaurant in Ohio (where the numbers of COVID-19 cases are rising, as they are elsewhere across the country) pointing out that raising and killing animals for food is the source of deadly diseases. The solution? Go vegan!

Why place our ad near a McDonald’s location? Currently, McDonald’s offers almost no vegan options. Even the French fries are cooked with beef flavoring. Millions of animals die every year for the chain’s menu items. If anyone needs to hear our message, it’s McDonald’s customers.

As long as humans confine animals in their own filth on factory farms and at meat markets, they risk starting another pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that approximately 75% of recently emerged infectious diseases affecting humans originated in other animals.

Mad cow disease, swine flu, avian flu, SARS, HIV, hoof-and-mouth disease, and other zoonotic diseases have all stemmed from capturing or farming animals. The novel coronavirus may have originated in a Chinese live-animal market—but when it comes to spawning dangerous pathogens, animal markets and slaughterhouses are one and the same the world over.

We’ll be better off as a species once we start viewing pigs as fellow living beings who love to play games and cuddle their babies—and chickens as the caring mothers they are. Like many other animals, cows have best friends, can solve critical-thinking problems, and enjoy the company of kind humans.

All animals value their lives and will do whatever they can to live free from harm. Once we finally acknowledge the complex lives of animals, we’ll be saving not only them but also ourselves.

There’s no excuse to keep using animals for food—PETA has everything you need to go vegan. Right here, right now.

Meat supply chain disruptions don’t mean a food shortage, because no one needs to eat meat and the vegan food supply is strong.

PETA offers free vegan starter kits, free vegan mentor services, and information on eco- and animal-friendly eating to help people stay healthy and put an end to slaughterhouses and other virus hotspots. Best of all, you’ll spare nearly 200 animals a year a terrifying death simply by not eating them! Click on the button below to kick off your vegan journey.
